It can be produced in an exothermic gas generator by burning natural gas, which is primarily composed of methane or other hydrocarbons with a small amount of oxygen. It is the cheapest shielding gas available. This process is exothermic since heat is being emitted during it.

CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + 2 H₂

The two main gases produced are carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The incomplete combustion of some methane and the water produced by the partial oxidation of hydrogen can also produce carbon monoxide, depending on the gas mixing ratio and reaction conditions. By giving the endothermic gas further treatment, the moisture content can be decreased. There may also be trace amounts of unburned hydrocarbons. Naturally, more nitrogen is present in the air used to burn methane; however, more nitrogen could be added in order to lower the proportion of hydrogen.

• CO (carbon monoxide) → 1% (volume)

• CO₂ (carbon dioxide) → 11% (volume)

• H₂ (hydrogen) → 1% (volume)

• O₂(Oxygen) → Nil

• N₂ (nitrogen) → Balance

Chemical composition of an Exo Gas (RICH RATIO):

• CO (carbon monoxide) → 11% to 12% (volume)

• CO₂ (carbon dioxide) → 5% to 6% (volume)

• H₂ (hydrogen) → 11% to 12% (volume)

• O₂ (Oxygen) → Nil

• N₂ (nitrogen) → Balance
